    Title: Zakat

Question: Six months back we purchased 15 tola of gold, with the intention that it can be used in marriages of ours. I have 2 brothers so 5 tola for each. I got my 5 tola on 17th Safar 1434 Hijrah, similarly my brothers Irfan (20 years) and Faizan (18 years) also got 5 tola each handed over to them on the same day mentioned above. Q1: I got the gold on the above mentioned date, i.e. only seven months before, 1 lunar year has not completed yet, but I have the bank balance which is greater than the nisab and 1 year has been completed on that and I am earning too. Now my question is do I need to give zakah only on the bank balance amount or do I need to include the gold and bank balance amount for calculating zakah. Q2: My brothers have also got the gold on the same date. They are yet pursuing their education and do not have any source of income. Is it required for them also to give zakah? My father has deposited 1, 50, 000/- and 50,000/- in their respective bank accounts. So do they need to pay zakah on this money?

    Bismillah hir-Rahman nir-Rahim !

(Fatwa: 1152/910/D=10/1434) When one year completes on the bank balance then you should pay its zakah as well as pay zakah of the gold available with you (though a complete separate year has not been passed on the gold). (2) The amount which your father deposited in the account of your brothers, did he make them its owner? If he made them its owner then this amount and 5 tola of gold when combined together becomes equal to the silver nisab and thus they will have to pay zakah after completion of the year. But if at the time of completing the year the balance is short as it was spent and the nisab is incomplete then zakah shall not be wajib.
