Title: The Hanbali scholar Sheikh Musa Furber elaborates the conditions in the Hanbali School for socks to be wiped over for wudhu

Question: The Hanbali scholar Sheikh Musa Furber elaborates the conditions in the Hanbali School for socks to be wiped over for wudhu. It is clear from his explanation that regular cotton socks qualify as "khuffain" in their madhhab. With all due respect, I am convinced that the Deobandi 'Ulama are mistaken about the Hanbali position on this issue. I hope you can see that this can lead to unnecessary fitna amongst the ranks of the believers in the west. If it is of any help, Sheikh Musa explains about Hanbali references: "If someone wants to know the position in the Hanbali madhhab used for Fatawa they go to: Kashshaf Al-Qina`, Al-Raud Al-Murbi`, Sharh Al-Muntaha (all by Al-Buhuti), Dalil Al-Talib (Mar`i bin Yusuf), or Nail Al-Ma?arib (Al-Taghlabi). If they want to list opinions in the madhhab then they go to: Al-Mughni (Ibn Qudamah), Al-Furu` (Ibn Muflih), or Al-Insaf (Al-Mardawi)."

    Bismillah hir-Rahman nir-Rahim !

(Fatwa: 271/L=188/TL=1433) We do not know the ruling of Hanbali Fiqh regarding the masah on nylon socks. You would better consult any Hanbali Mufti for the same. As far as the matter of masah over prevalent nylon or cotton socks is concerned, according to Hanafi Fiqh they do not carry the status of khuffain, hence masah is not right on these socks. In the book "Fiqhi Maqalat" written by Mufti Taqi Usmani Saheb there is a separate booklet, you may study it. Note: We issue Fatwas only according to Hanafi Fiqh.
