(Fatwa: 1558/1227/B=1431)

Yes, it is lawful. Whenever the holy Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) had to go for Jihad, journey etc he appointed Hadhrat Abdullah ibn Um Maktoom or Hadhrat U’tban ibn Malik (رضى الله عنهما) for imamah (leading salah) in his place and these used to do imamah in Masjid-e-Nabwi while they were blind.
