    Bismillah hir-Rahman nir-Rahim !

    (Fatwa: 1130/1130/M=1431)

Almighty Allah says in Surah Al-Ahzab regarding one who is adopted (adopted brother or sister):
Allah has not made for any man two hearts in his chest cavity, nor did he make your wives whom you subjected to Zihar, your mothers, nor did he make your adopted sons your (real) sons. That is (merely) a word uttered by your mouths. And Allah says the truth and He shows the (rights) way.
Call them by (the name of) their (real) fathers; it is more equitable in the sight of Allah. And if you do not know their fathers, then they are your brothers in faith and your friends.

Islam does not stop to take care and help orphans, waif, stray and helpless children rather it teaches and emphasizes the same. However it prohibits to declare them as real son because it affects a part of Muslim Personnel Law. So by making someone adopted son, the rulings of real son will not be applicable on him.
