It is not allowed for two persons of ten years or more to sleep at one bed without any partition of cloth or something else, whether one is on one side and the other is on the other side. And, if there is a partition between them then it is makrooh-e-tanzeehi (undesirable):

قال الشامی: (مضاجعۃ الرجل) أی فی ثوب واحد لا حاجز بینھما و ھو المفھوم من الحدیث الآتی و بہ فسر الاتقانی المکامعۃ علی خلاف ما مر عن الھدایۃ، وھل المراد أن یتلفا فی ثوب واحد أو أن یکون أحدھما فی ثوب واحد دون الآخر، والظاھر الأول یؤیدہ مانقلہ عن مجمع البحار أی متجردین وان کان بینھما حائل فیکرہ تنزیھاً (الشامی: 9/548)

By ?level? if you mean to what level friendship is allowed, then you should know that friendship is allowed until it does not cause any thing prohibited in Islam. But, if it causes any unlawful thing then it should be avoided. Likewise, if friendship proves helpful in good and Islamic matters then it is desirable and praiseworthy.
