The people of your village are right. The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has ordered to kill Girgit (geckos) and regarded it an act of reward:

عن سائبة انھا دخلت علی عائشة فراٴت في بیتھا رمحا موضوعا فقالت یا ام المؤمنین ماتصنعین بھذا، قالت نقتل بہ ھذہ الاوزاغ فان نبی اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم اخبرنا ان ابراھیم لما القی في النار لم تکن في الارض دابة الا اطفاٴت النار غیر الوزغ فانھا کانت تنفخ علیہ، فامر رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم بقتلہ (رواہ ابن ماجة في سننہ ابواب الصید) وروی من قبل عن ابي ھریرة عن رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم قال: من قتل وزغا في اول ضربة فلہ کذا و کذا حسنة، و من قتلھا في الثانیة فلہ کذا و کذا حسنة ادنی من الاولی، و من قتلہ في الضربة الثالثة فلہ کذا و کذا حسنة ادنی من الذی ذکرہ في المرة الثانیة۔
