Recent data from the national census report has shown that sex ratio (number of females per 1000 males) has slipped even among Muslims. Social activists feel that the evil of "sex selective abortion" (eliminating the fetus after finding that it is a female) has made its way to the community. In the light of the above facts, I ask the following questions:
(1) Does Islam/Quran/Hadith say about abortions/sex selective abortions /female infanticide? Please enlist some points.
(2) What does Islam/Quran/Hadith say about duties of a parent towards daughters?
(3) Is there any punishment for those who ill-treat their daughters whether in the womb or in real life?

(Fatwa: 708/708/SD=08/1437)

(1) Aborting a female fetus due to its sex is unlawful and haram. During ignorance era people used to bury their daughters alive which the Holy Quran condemned severely. It is totally unlawful and haram to abort the fetus when it is four months old without severe compulsion.

(2, 3) Islam orders us to treat our daughters well. There is no concept of misfortune and disrespect in Islam regarding girls. Girl is also a boon from Allah which Islam asks to value. Once the Holy Prophet Muhammad, may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said, “He who is involved in the responsibility of bringing up daughters, and he is benevolent towards them, they would become protection for him against Hell-fire”.

قال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: من ابتلي من البنات بشئ ، فأحسن إليهن ، كن له ستراً من النار (مسلم).
