It is proved from hadith that the Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) sometimes used to keep his neck collar open. Some of the Sahaba liked it so much that they made it their habit:

عن معاویۃ بن مرہ عن ابیہ رضی اللہ عنہ قال: اتیت رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم فی رھط من مزینۃ و ان قمیصہ لمطلق او قال زر قمیصہ (شمائل الترمذی 5) قال عروۃ: فما رایت معاویۃ ولا ابنہ الا مطلقی ازارھما فی شتاء ولاحر ولا یزرران ازارھما (ابو داود کتاب اللباس)
